Happy Harwich Port – Happy House
8 Miles Street
In their June issue, Coastal Living Magazine announced the 2013 winners of the 10 Happiest Seaside Towns in America. Harwich Port was #2.
8 Miles Street was a great choice – it’s what I call a double-walk. It’s within easy walking distance to all the shops and restaurants in Harwich Port. And, it’s an easy walk to beautiful Nantucket Sound beaches like the beach at the end of Wyndemere Bluffs Road.
According to Bankrate, Inc., they are “the Web’s leading aggregator of financial rate information.” They also state that their web site(s) have “more that 15 million unique visitors every month” – whom they describe as “upscale, educated and affluent, and web-savvy.”
Bankrate.com also publishes “original and objective personal finance stories.” On September 16th the article featuring the 10 happy homes was listed as one of their top 10 most read articles.
The 10 featured houses were not the most expensive properties for sale in each happy town. List prices ranged from $310,000 – to – $695,000 with a median list price of $385,500. The median size of these 10 houses is 1,242 SqFt – which is the exact size of 8 Miles Street – not including its sunroom.
One of the interesting features of 8 Miles Street highlighted in the Bankrate.com article was its very funky wall phone. Hand painted by the owner, it’s an old dial phone that still works. I called it many times and even left messages. For a cute story about a little boy trying to understand this strange phone go see the eMagazine: Funky Phone.
Coastal Living Magazine revealed how they picked the 10 winners. “We began with every place we’ve lauded as a Dream Town over the past 15 years, and took your nominations on Facebook. You could vote hourly January 10 through February 28. We polled our editors on each finalist to define the special ‘coastal vibe’ and mixed it into the formula to create an all-star list from every coast.”

I first heard about this year’s Happiest Seaside Towns contest via a Facebook message from another Harwich Port realtor, Nancy Peterson of Peterson Realty. Later Nancy told me that she and her friends, “would go on the Facebook page of Coastal Living Magazine and LIKE them – and then share the post with their Facebook friends.” So it seems that the people in Harwich Port – and all of Harwich – are not only happy, they’re also pretty savvy about computers and social media. This a great honor for our town. And, after all, we really are happy people.
